I'm thinking of it in relation to paragraphs like these, both from Deutsch. (But he may be misreading Kuhn here, and I may be overdrawing the analogy.) I have to get back to work, but will think harder about this before my next reply! Thanks for engaging.

This is very helpful! Is it from a forthcoming Eggplant chapter? This bit from Kegan does seem very Popperian, but I guess CR would have to explain how the conjecture and criticism processes are getting micro-implemented in everyday practical action.

Super interesting to think about narrative as a kind of psychotechnology for relating to the past and future.

I think this is compatible with his definitions of rational and anti-rational as “replication strategies” for memes? In the past, belief in hell replicated because of its utility in solving certain problems. Today, it mainly replicates by exploiting psychological vulnerabilities.

In the meantime, we seem to be actively avoiding those places in modern life where meanings are too slippery to grasp. E.g:

The focus on inevitable problems that are dealt with as they arise (rather than final, complete theories) also squares well with your view. Deutsch even says (here: ) that all explicit theories are undergirded by a vast background of inexplicit ideas...

You can also dramatize the conflict with systematic ethics:

Following and , I think movies do a great job getting at the messy, contextual nature of ethical experience. A Separation is a favorite here.
