    The lighting in Gish uses the stencil buffer, shadows are drawn by extending back-facing edges. Since it's 2D each light's shadow only requires 1 bit, so 8 lights can be on screen at the same time without needing to clear the stencil buffer.

    If the excuse not to be explicit in programming is "there are times when the compiler can optimise"; is that good programming? There is no keyword or clarity to "the compiler *should* optimise this".

    It's sad to see this happening in the Rust community: I've not reviewed the code but the use of unsafe isn't inherently bad. It is part of Rust's design; unsafe brings attention to an area of code. If you don't like it, don't use the library.

    What do people think about a programming language feature where there's a builtin intrinsic that just reads 2, 4, or 8 bytes, from memory known to be either big or little endian, and returns an integer in the correct byte order: a no-op if they match, fastest instructions if not.

    No, that's not how it works. I used to believe the same thing and always loved my job (and still do). Until I burnt out heavily last summer after overworking myself for ~8 years. I'm still recovering from that incident, 18 months later. Take care of yourself, everyone.

    Remember that video about how block collisions can compute the digits of pi? A friend, Adam Brown, just showed that the math underlying this is actually identical to the math behind a very famous quantum search algorithm (Grover's): Genuinely crazy!
