The US government was building prisons at an alarming rate, someone had to work them. These Black young sistas on welfare were the involuntary victims. Overnight prisons went from mostly men employees to women -- many Black.
The prison system was built because slavery ended. Specifically built up so that Black people could be incarcerated for whatever like loitering and then leased back out. It was created to enslaved Black people.
