It's a terrible thing that I had to tell my children never say anything to police except "bring in my parent or a lawyer"

The magic words are "I want a lawyer and I'm not speaking to you." In many states they don't have to call your parents but invoking your right to counsel works everywhere. And if you're in a little room with them at the station there is a camera so they kinda have to stop.

Am I free to go/I want a lawyer are all they need to say pretty much ever.

So true. The police are not your friend or therapist. If it’s serious enough for them to take you to the station for questioning, then it’s serious enough to ask for a lawyer
