Some general thoughts on the response to this: 1. Many need to actually read the article 2. Language is important (notice: “suggests” and “may” in my original post) 3. By the same token, maybe the title could have been “Challenging the narrative” instead of “Debunking the myth”

Very excited to finally share this work and honored to have gotten the chance to work on this with my UK colleagues, Val Curran and Steve O'Brien.

The results of course require further follow-up and validation, but we are excited to challenge the narrative around this aspect of MDMA use and are interested in hearing others' thoughts.

Participants instead maintained overall positive moods (ie afterglow) in the week after dosing as well as showed improvements in sleep quality at our long-term follow-up.

Our results support this, as when MDMA was given in a clinical context, where drug purity was controlled and patients could get adequate sleep and nutrition, there was no evidence of impaired mood after dosing.

Therefore, it may be these factors that account for "Blue Mondays" seen in ravers rather than MDMA itself.

However, there are many confounds with this research: when taken illicitly, "MDMA" is often cut with other substances, combined with alcohol and other drugs by the user, and taken in nightlife settings, where there can be concomitant dehydration, overheating, and lack of sleep

To begin, post-acute affect drop (ie "Blue Monday") has been commonly documented with MDMA users (see: ), and this has been raised as a limitation to the drug's clinical use

Does MDMA actually lead to mood drop in the days after dosing? Our new study in Journal of Psychopharmacology with clinically administered MDMA suggests this may be a myth 🧵👇

As clinicians attempt to integrate psychedelic therapy into Western medicine, being able to predict how a person reacts to a psychedelic trip is a principal aim that can reduce harm in the long run.

We at agree—you shouldn't be able to say a study was "double-blind" or "placebo-controlled" without testing such claims. This is actually a pervasive problem across areas of clinical research, not just with psychedelics! See our review:
