Ezra Klein has helpfully clarified the dynamics of polarization. But I think his focus on the nationalization of political identity misses out on an important countercurrent: the internet-fueled fractalization of identity.

Most people look around and ask, "where am I?", and then they ask "which side am I on?". And the internet changes answers to that first question, even if the second question always converges towards a dichotomy.

Two important things to recognize as you look around a place like Twitter: 1. Not everyone is hanging out around the same region of identity-space. 2. The identities and affiliations that are most attractive/powerful are those that are indexed to one's chosen milieu.

This would argue for changing the Congress into a German-style elected parliament that represents all factions. The in fact two-party system has failed. After polarization, corruption followed and Trump takes it to new heights. But the power of money was already very unhealthy.
