    Stacey Abrams will be the Sesquicentennial Commencement Speaker at Tougaloo College, May 5, 2019. The Mississippi-raised powerhouse was the first Black woman to become a major party nominee for governor of Georgia. Her parents are both graduates of the institution.

  16. Oprah Winfrey signed on with Apple’s new streaming service, AppleTV+, to present 2 documentaries and introduce live-streamed talks for her book club. One documentary, Toxic Labor, explores sexual harassment in the workplace and a docu-series follows the affects of mental illness.

  17. Tougaloo College has elected its second woman president. Dr. Carmen Walters was selected by the Board of Trustees to become the 14th president at the college. “This position is a dream come true for me,” Dr. Walters said. “Tougaloo has such a rich and powerful history.”
