One of the dangers of making abstract sculpture is that you compete with, and lose to, things that are not even even intended to be art.

When ingroup exaggerates, it's justifiable concern over tail risks. When outgroup exaggerates, it's deranged paranoia and conspiracy theorising.

These are all cases of “induced demand”, which really means latent demand being uncovered. None of them disprove the laws of economics. And in all cases, *twice as many customers were served*, which is good in itself.

Have you kept quiet when you disagreed with someone? We all have. It's ever harder to engage honorably over complex ideas. Consider having a difficult & civil conversation in the competition, in which I am honored to be a judge. Entries due February 1.

Here’s a robust psychological effect that does not wilt under replication scrutiny. Kurt Lewin noticed it in the 1930s: making public commitments “freezes” attitudes in place. So saying something dumb makes you a bit dumber. It becomes harder to correct yourself. Tweeters beware.

Hey, so serious question: can we get some people to step up and have a full-blown exchange on about this? It's really a better medium for it, and boy howdy is this an important conversation.

We should treat college as the empty credentialing it really is: strip all credit requirements, you just take an entrance test, pay $200k, take a 4 year vacation and get a certificate that let’s you get a job appropriate to how you performed on the entrance exam.

The more people in the conversation, the harder it becomes to speak the uncomfortable truth. Social media puts everyone into the same conversation.

Modal answer is that must correct view of intellectuals by 20-50% to deal w/ fact that they not fully honest & truth-seeking. I'd say needed correction is FAR larger.

Really enjoying this exchange so far, but I want to draw special attention to letter #4. "Nutpicking" (appeal to extreme bad behavior) is a common stumbling block in culture war arguments and I've never seen a better response to that argument. Learn this response.
