The Cemitério de Vila Formosa (Vila Formosa Cemetery) is a necropolis located in the East End district of Vila Formosa, in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It is Latin America's largest cemetery.
Created on May 20, 1949, the cemetery has an area of about 192 acres, where more than 1.5 million people have been buried to date. It is a space used in particular for burials of poor people and those from the lower middle classes.
According to the mayor, the opening of dozens of pits in rows is the standard procedure for municipal cemeteries at this time of year, when the rainy season ends.
Per G1, the number of burials in São Paulo until April 22 was 18% higher than in the same period last year. In 2019, there were 5,226 burials. In 2020, that number rose to 6,171.
