Also many East European/Eastern cultures have home clothes and outdoor clothes. And you wash your hands as soon as you have come home and changed your shoes. Then you change your clothes and wash your hands again. Small things matter.

Well, it's the decades of not seeing fellow human beings literally defecating in the streets that made us this way. I bet San Franciscans all take their shoes off at the door. It's not a marker of civilization, it's a sign of the decline.
