You can do economically viable mass transit systems in cities with sufficient population density (NYC, Tokyo). (NYC's subway system was originally composed of privately built lines.) Current events have revealed a major downside of high population density however.

Tokyo is not the only one. The Bangkok BTS and MRT are also private and are amazing. (You also don't have station attendants cramming people into cars like sardines like Tokyo in rush hour)
