I’ve been to China. The Chinese tour guide at Tiananmen Square was convinced that the protester who stood in front of the tank was arrested and allowed to exile to another country. He thought no one was killed. He was a Professor and those were his students.

Wondering if he really believed that was what occurred or if that was the narrative he had to stick to for fear of his own safety. Guessing he had doubts, but fully understood the ramifications of openly speaking out. Possibly not, but seems reasonable.
