I think everyone should hold a manual labor job at least once in their lives. It teaches you that objective reality requires WORK to change, and it cannot be swayed by feelings or words. That's a lesson many people sorely need right now.

When I was a kid all the town children were expected to help the farmers with hay in the summer and your pay was drinks and lunch.

I worked on a neighbor’s farm from age 11 to 15, loved it! Got paid $1 per hour, about half of which went to baseball cards and candy.

Way more kids would choose to work than people give them credit for. It’s employers that are scared to hire them. Many pitfalls for employing minors.

Maybe a mandatory semester or two to learn a work standard and food does not "just happen". Saw a video of a NYC getto kid that thought you planted steak in a wrapper to grow more meat. He was 14 years old.

Was raised in the city. In the summer my parents sent me to stay on the farm with my grandma, aunt & uncle. They made me work for about $5 day. It taught me a lot.
