I have had nurses & EMT tell me even though the patient was dying from previous conditions but tested positive for COVID19 cause of death was listed as COVID19 even though the cancer, heart failure or pneumonia was taking them down first. All about the $$$$

1) The cause of death is reported every few days (before a coroner could rule on the cause) and the rules allow the hospital to count the Covid 19 as cause of death if it was associated with the death, then readjusted later, up or down.

Per the CDC: “What happens if the terms reported on the death certificate indicate uncertainty? If the death certificate reports terms such as “probable COVID-19” or “likely COVID-19,” these terms would be assigned the new ICD code. It Is not likely that NCHS will follow up.
