You could argue he compromised the operational security of his vessel by letting enemies know it was combat ineffective. Surely there had to be a better way to communicate up the chain of command?

That is exactly what happened. We were ordered not to communicate numbers or locations for opsec. He acted like an irrational woman.

As soon as he had his secretary start typing that letter, he knew damn well it would be leaked. Just notified the world that at least one of our aircraft carriers was out of commission.
