Thank God Jesus defeat satan so we don't have to. Fasting under the new covenant is to put unbelief under. Yes, it has health benefits too. It does not give you more power, more faith, or even more closeness to the Father. It's does however make you more attentive to His voice.

Jesus does refer to fasting in Matthew 6.16-18, but Lent fasting is a mad made idea. "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast." In other words, just do it, don't advertise it.
