The news is that the request was so ridiculous and then that it's supposedly being changed. The actual sentencing will also be news no matter what.

Easy. This is designed to make it look like Barr's DOJ is favoring Stone, when the more likely scenario is: DEEP STATE prosecutors maliciously prosecuted and then maliciously set sentencing recommendations.

Also because the Probation Office apparently agreed with the DOJ calculation. There are four parties to a federal sentencing - the defense, the prosecutors, the Probation Office, & the judge. The judges usually heavily weigh the PO’s views although the judge has the last word.

There can be a full on evidentiary hearing for sentencing and the judge considers arguments by both sides, for mitigating (defense) and aggravating (prosecution) factors.
