Any veterans out there ever call their rifle an "assault weapon?" I'm only a Cold War veteran and I never heard that expression from the guys who served in Vietnam. Sounds weird to me.

Absolutely correct. I thought the same thing.... most would simply say “weapon”. Plus, those “weapons” that are used in war are not what is available to American civilian citizens here on U.S. soil.
