There were a lot of regulations put in place by Obama admin against coal users, which resulted in premature closure of some coal power plants. Coal generation wouldn’t have dropped otherwise as it is an economical and clean source of power

Coal dropped because gas is cheaper. That's all. It has the beneficial impact that on a BTU-released basis it also produces half the CO2.
