I've been impressing upon my students for decades that there is no harm in being proud of one's heritage. They may not remember my name years from now, but I hope they remember how I taught them to refer to themselves: "I am an American of (insert identifier) descent/heritage."

It's very similar in Europe, societies of the old continent are proud Europeans and at the same time proud French, British, Poles, etc.

I'm also German on my mom's side. My great uncle was an admiral in the Nazi navy. And I'm swedish which I think is pretty cool
