‘By arming Islamic rebels in the 80s the US liberated Afghanistan for democracy and freedom!’ - Said no serious person ever Neocons are such a joke We have so many of their bloody messes to clean up

You know, in fairness, I do believe that arming the Mujahideen in the 80s against the Soviets was in our interest of forcing the collapse of the USSR. I think our playing neo-empire in the ME after the Persian Gulf war in the 90s contributed heavily to the rise of Al Qaeda.

The Taliban directly rose out of the Mujahideen through US arming and camps run by Saudi and Pakistan during the war ‘Talib’ itself means student, as many were taught together in the camps

Ok, here’s my quibble. Would AQ (not the Taliban) had risen to influence and operational strength from Gulf State intelligence agencies had we not greatly expanded our foreign policy aims in the Gulf after the Persian Gulf War? I maintain that they would not.

Sure that’s also part of the neocon story. AQ/Bin Laden and the Taliban both trace their militant roots and combat experience back to the mujahideen and the Soviet-Afghan Warpic.twitter.com/gdctVZZ0ae

Ehhh... when I read OBL, it seems he references the Infidels on Saudi soil alot more than the 80s war against the Soviets. Maybe I’m wrong. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, as shortly after going back home to KSA OBL offered to use his fighters to combat Saddam in Kuwait and protect KSA but Saudi King said no and invited USA troops in. Having US troops on “holy land” was harám for him and he thought King had failed as Custodian of Holy Places.

Let me think about this one more. I still maintain that our hegemony in the Gulf after the 91’ war contributed more to the rise of AQ than our operations in AF-PAK, but I could be convinced. Either way, if we want to ever leave Afghanistan, we have to talk to the Taliban.
