Britain had no choice. It was a 99-year lease. When the lease was up, the landlord wanted the land and wealth back, and Britain had to let it all go.

They could have driven a harder bargain. Possession is 9/10ths of the law. The PLA was not the force that it is today, and the West and Japan could have said “We can do this the easy way (negotiate better terms for HK) or the hard way... your choice.”

Now you’re telling the truth. China paid with gold bars to get HK back. HK was sold out for $$ without any option of independence whatsoever. When you are acquired at a high price, chances are you won’t have “real freedom” however you may call it.
