Excellent, Jack! The Declaration of Independence is not a “living document,” either. Neither is the Constitution. When I was in school (70’s) we memorized/had to recite the Preamble. I still can. I bet no one in recent decades can say that. Sad! Oh, we conjugated verbs, too.

And I'm beginning to think Statue of Liberty was a bad idea and not a sincere gesture by France. We asked for all the poor people... And they came and are still coming. Except the poor people of the past had scruples and honor. Not so anymore.

That poem was added later. The statue was never originally meant to say that “everyone is welcome,” but it was just welcoming those who came in.

I would approach the issue of immigration this way. Our entire philosophy of governance is a contract between the government and the governed. To enter this country illegally, then, violates our most basic precepts. Citizenship is based on responsibility and accountability.
