We need to stop bickering about which “side” defunded the US mental health system And start asking which side is going to fix the problem

My father and grandmother both spent their careers working in mental health Their service to the community, even in austere conditions has always had a deep influence on me And if you're wondering, my mom also works in healthcare, developing medicines

I agree wholeheartedly. I’ve witnessed so many mentally ill people roaming around my own community, talking to themselves, sometimes distraught over mundane things... they need help! They need shelter! Sadly, homeless shelters aren’t equipped to handle them.

...They get kicked out for causing problems..These are people with no one to advocate for them, left to fend for themselves when they can hardly function. They aren’t on drugs, doubt they’d even be able to administer them... it’s just sad.

It started w/ Willowbrook, 1972. One Flew Over came out in 1975. The public, & Congress were so outraged they dismantled the system, instead of fixing it. Making >18 yrs immune from family intervention major flaw.https://timeline.com/willowbrook-the-institution-that-shocked-a-nation-into-changing-its-laws-c847acb44e0d …

I live here & we have an at-will system for svs.We can't mandate anyone to go to a shelter/receive mental health or substance abuse treatment that is offered. The far, far majority refuse for many reasons. They don't want to follow rules, can't take animals, etc.
