Technically not acid, but caustic. Cement causes liquefaction necrosis, while acid causes coagulant necrosis. Same result, different mechanism, which is chemical burns. I have suffered both types. Not pleasant. Cement is particularly painful.

that means they were throwing Silica... which is is a hazardous material according to MSDS
