I believe the majority decisions on flag burning went the other way in the courts.

I'm still right on the fence on this issue. I hear Candace and Rehnquist, then I read Raheem's excellent thread. I hate the flag burning either way, but what to do about it...and should we do something about it? If so, why, with what consequences. The last bit is hard to predict.

Isn't it clear that destroying the flag is symbolic speech calling for the violent overthrow of the government?

Think about someone pouring gasoline on the Statue of Liberty and setting it on fire... would pro-flag burners still say it’s protected?
-
It doesn't matter, the issue has already been ruled on, it is settled. Flag burning, regardless of personal views on the subject, is protected under 1A.

Trump's stance against flag burning undermines the Right's fight for free speechhttps://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/trumps-stance-against-flag-burning-undermines-the-rights-fight-for-free-speech …

Freedom of speech isn’t without limits. You also can’t yell fire in a crowded movie theater.
