Those are called limpet mines. "Magnetic mines" are a whole different animal.

I thought it interesting which side of the ship the explosion happened on and where the ship was when it exploded. No way of knowing, but my purely uninformed opinion was the same as your experts. Not a torpedo. Looked more like a mine planted in port and triggered remotely.
