Fuller Projection.
They are all distorted in one way or another- that's the point! They are projections or, more accurately, transforms. You can't represent a sphere in two dimensions without something giving; the mapmaker chooses what to optimise. So, on a naval map it will be direction.
No 2D projection of a 3D planet is true. No problem, choose a projection that most accurately conveys the features you want to focus on whether that be shape, area, or distance at a particular location. Actually, our planet is 4D (spacetime) just like something else I read about.
The Gall-Peters map looks distorted because it shows a true geographical representation of the countries. Africa’s footprint is much larger than what the natgeo map shows. Europe is tiny which is why people can travel from one country to the other in such a short period.
I agree Africa is way bigger than a half inch! Good call. I think it probably distorted mostly because it’s representing a round object on a flat surface. Thanks for the tour of Europe.
