Dark = real size Light = distorted size (Mercator's projection). Northern Hemisphere countries are really far smaller.

In general we’ll continue use the Mercator map because it’s really important when doing things like..... navigating, the exact thing is was specifically designed to do.

It's the flat map projection that works for navigating a round planet. As in, navigating by ship across the ocean and reaching, say, Plymouth Rock instead of Greenland. Kind of important.

I think it's got something to do with drawing something round on a flat surface. In order to keep the coordinates in line, you have to stretch it out and whatnot.

That's what a Mercator projection is. There are different types of maps of the Earth's surface.
