I have been writing, performing and teaching guitar since the mid-70s. The biggest casualty of digital recording is musician proficiency. Guitarists, drummers and bassists that can't keep time and singers that can't sing on pitch. I will take Motown over Nashville any day.

Before computerized recording, we actually had to master our instruments and practice our craft. The resultant lack of musicianship in most pop genres caused by the "ProTools generation" has left the music uninteresting and stale.

Okay, some of us who grew up on synthpop in the 80's would beg to differ. I challenge anyone to listen to Tina Turner, Laura Branigan, Duran Duran or Madonna, circa 1984, and tell me drum machines are all downside.

All those you mention primarily in this period used real drums and on occasion Simmons played by a drummer.

Lmao ProTools and computers made it possible for anyone to run a studio off their laptop in their bedroom. Technology isn’t the issue, it’s just that technology allows you to cut corners in a way that never sounds as natural as doing it the ole fashioned way.
