UPDATE: Poso sci-fi mystery novel is at 52,000 words Really cooking now Goal is 80-90k The average wordcount for a typical novel is anywhere from 70,000 to 120,000 words

The actual average number of words in a novel was somewhere close to 90,000 words. How come? Because novels mostly cluster at the shorter end of that 70-120K spectrum. There are plenty of prolific authors who might never break the 100,000 word barrier

Crime novels often run on the shorter side. It's a thriller, not epic fantasy. So although 75,000 words is fine as a lower limit, anything up to 130,000 words is standard. Don’t go below 75,000, though.

My entire premise was - why not do a hardboiled detective story That could work in ANY setting But set it in sci-fi Why? Bc I love sci-fi And it lets you play with the genre in different ways

Asimov’s Olivaw novels were great. At least the first couple Elijah Bailey ones.

Look at Douglas Adams. His books are really thin! But he's in big demand. Same with Asimov. And many others. Bradbury!
