If Stonewall Jackson would have been at Gettysburg he would no doubt advised Lee to either try flanking the Union army or “pull back and fight another day”. Pickett’s charge was an unnecessary slaughter of Southern troops by an over ambitious Lee.

Actually Longstreet tried both of those but Lee chose otherwise.

        1. Longstreet undermined Lee by intentional delay....The attack was late ....the union was ready. 2. Stuart who had been AWOL for days was supposed to circle behind and attack the Union rear. Custer stymied him with 1/10th the force His ablest Generals failed him badly

Well, there was divine sovereignty at work. Once the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, God engaged for the North. It was about all those prayers from the slave shacks. God said ”Let my people go!”

Good thought. Well said. It was also a practical advantage. Lincoln & Grant made aprx 110,000 freed black men soldiers in the Union army. Men who fought hard & had good reason to serve the Union well. Grant, greatly impressed by the freed men demanded they be paid same Army pay.

The funny thing is that all the northern soldiers came from the south and all the Rebel solders came out of the north to fight the battle of Gettysburg. Maybe Lee should've kept punching northward.

Grant respected Lee Still, he understood he'd defeat Lee handily. Grant described how Lee was simply too old to deal with the stress of living in the field under the intense onslaught Grant would unleash & faced with the furor Lee'd sacrifice the confederacy to save his native VA
