When it comes to style, I think Heinlein's got the both of them beat. There's just a viscerial quality to his writing that neither Herbert nor Asimov could match.

Just my personal preference. It was a twist he used repeatedly throughout the books (without leaving any spoilers out their for potential readers) and even though you're aware of it, it gets you every time! Haven't read any more of either of their books though that I can recall.

You know it's been more than a trilogy since the 80s right? Plus, the Robot and Foundation series are connected, along with a couple other Asimov books, into one big sci-fi mythos.
