Even in the early 90s our Earth Day assemblies played what amounted to eco propaganda films from the early 80s about Acid Rain and the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Thinking now about the rates of slash-and-burn they used, South American wouldn't have a single tree today.

I remember hearing of it when I was younger, but not with much explanation. Left to my own imagination, I thought the rain would burn me. Memory is too foggy to condemn anybody though; only faintly recall the phrase/warning.

It was a global thing not really American. Even in NZ we were told there was so much pollution in the sky that the rain could bring these down and damage skin, cars etc
