I wanted to believe Syrio found his way out somehow. In the book, he seemed pretty awesome in my mind. When they cast Bob Ross Mario Brother to play him for the show, I knew he wasn't going to survive.

You are correct. We never see in the show or the books Syrio Forel actually dying. But the show's creators made it very clear that Syrio was dead, at least as it relates to the show (see enclosed).https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/syrio-forel-alive-or-dead-game-of-thrones-showrunners-finally-give-definitive-answer-a6983661.html …

1. Ser Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning, considered the finest and greatest knight in the history of Westeros, did indeed die, but he did not lose to Ned. He died honorably after a lifetime in the service of his prince, Prince Rhaegar. Where is the physical/moral deformity?

2. Prince Rhaegar did not start the war. He married Lyanna and was with her when the Mad King burned the Starks at King's Landing. When Lord Jon Arryn refused to give over Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark to the King and, instead, raised his banners, Robert's Rebellion began.
