I get this question a lot - I decided to enlist as an intel specialist first and then apply for officer later In the intel field it’s common to find enlisted members with degrees, masters, I even know an E8 with a PhDhttps://twitter.com/Quietmodealt/status/1084057665209360390 …

One question on your bio please. As a college graduate why did you not join the Navy as an officer? Why the time delay to become an officer?

True, its becoming more and more common. Almost a necessity to make E7. I’ve had a E6 finishing his PhD before. Many of the E8-E9 I worked with all had bachelors and masters... with a surprising number of PhDs.

All true. And many Intel NCOs, instead of becoming admin types will become Warrant Officers. (At least in the army 98C/G MOS)

Very true! Intel field has lots of higher education in the enlisted ranks. Only way to guarantee language training is to enlist.

I actually wish more officers were enlisted first. Teach them what it’s like on the bottom. I think it makes them better leaders.

I fucking hated it. Well, after I made Chief, I hated them. I liked brand new academy officers when I was a 7. Didn't have to unlearn a bunch of shit. An officer has a place and some places he/she don't belong. Prior enlisted struggled to learn that.
