The gist: In souther Germany and co Santa Claus doesn't bring the presents, but rather visits on the 6th as Saint Nick (basically the same guy) and gives a small gift bag (Nikolaussackerl) with nuts, mandarins, gingerbread, chocolate and maybe small toys.

He comes with several of these guys and visits houses in the more rural/traditional areas. He basically has these guys to scare the children straight since they will take bad behaving children away (Spoiler alert: Never happens).

I learned about Krampus in my German language class in high school. It's basically a really weird German version of Santa Claus. It's not that weird though when you think of our Santa "he sees you when you're sleeping, knows if you're awake".
