Patriotism and nationalism are primarily being used to refer to a general love of one's country. So yeah both hands are up in the air! @POTUS grateful for you as our President!

The root word of patriot is Latin for country . Once upon a time the world trembled before France. What happened to them ?

Nationalism is also a synonym for xenophobia and jingoism. If he meant patriotism, he should have said patriotism.pic.twitter.com/m3V0tRFTms

The connotations matter. Some folks will say 'I'm a patriot but not a nationalist', and this means they're embarrassed about being either.

Nationalism = Good! Socialism = Bad! USA + Nationalism = Self reliance! EU + US ÷ Socialists = NOT AMERICA. Thats as simple as it can be made.
