I wouldn't say things like that were "ok", but they were common and accepted by the masses. When I was a kid in the '60s and early '70s, we didn't say "catch a Tiger by the toe" or "Jerry rig". At the time, I didn't know it was wrong, but I wouldn't say it was "ok".
