Alan Turing was born on this day in 1912. His innovations during WW2 saved up to 14 million lives. His country repaid him with forced chemical castration simply because he was gay. Alan then took his own life

There is a film ‘The Imitation Game’ which covers his WW2 work and also the awful way he was treated afterwards. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Turing, I think quite sensitively. Worth watching to learn about his life and death.
His story always makes me feel terribly sad but also terribly lucky to live in today’s world.

Great strides have been made in terms of gay rights since Turing was driven to suicide but constant vigilance must be maintained so that this hard won progress is not lost.
Rest in peace Alan Turing.
An amazing mind with an incredible talent. And also a tortured soul. And not to be recognized for all the work he had done during ww2. And then so unfairly treated just because he was gay.
He was not "recognized" because it was ultra secret, and he knew how important his contribution was, and he knew that Churchill and the handful of people who were aware of it knew. There is a theory that all of the other intelligence that Britain developed during the war...
