The main disconnect when I talk to Americans about NY is that if America was a real country with actual state capacity then New York would be a sleepy place people went to retire and Washington DC would be like Hong Kong
What does this mean? I’ve lived in New York, Washington DC and Hong Kong and I can’t figure it out. HK is like HK largely because of its natural geography. It’s only as dense because there’s nowhere to go. Look at Beijing for a comparison
