Kids in my neighborhood walk around in groups of 13 after school unsupervised. It's a... huge mess.

This was pretty much childhood before the age of helicopter parenting and endless resume-padding extracurriculars. Not sure what the mess is

Lots of bullying and fighting. It would just be a lot more positive if they were supervised or had something to do.

Couldn’t disagree more. That’s pretty much how I grew up, latchkey kid from 3rd grade. I dealt with bullies, sometimes had to fight. Not something kids should have to do, but it contributed to a certain resiliency Don’t see that constant supervision has made healthier adults

That’s possible. It’s also possible that we simply have a legitimate disagreement over how much time children need to spend in structured, supervised activity
