There’s reactionary populism (Trump) and progressive populism (Bernie). Either way, it’s an approach rooted in appealing to “real people” by denigrating elites or other perceived outgroups
Most people’s political preferences are not rooted in specific policy preferences. They’re rooted in identitarian narratives about who the good guys are. Most people vote for the candidate that tells them the most flattering story

Well to me the good guys are the ones who advocate for policy that helps the people who need help. That improves conditions for everyone.
