In today's @Markets newsletter, I wrote about leverage: Pre-crisis it was about borrowing money to lever up an asset (typically a home) Post-crisis it was about taking on major career risk for the unlikely shot at a major startup payday http://link.mail.bloombergbusiness.com/join/4wm/markets-signup&hash=b9b2681361bede0e1069ca238efb1ec2 …pic.twitter.com/hWB1xfNmQj

There's been a lot written about the toxicity of "hustle" culture (which I loathe). But nobody's really examined it as a financial phenomenon. Moving to a city, getting up at 4 AM to "grind" for the unlikely shot that you're going to hit it big.

On the surface that doesn't really look like finance, it's essentially a individual version of the asymmetrical bets that VCs make all the time, except you're putting your whole life on the line, and unlike VCs, you don't have the benefit of limited partners or diversification.

Another example of the changing leverage. People used to go to those big Real Estate Wealth Expos to hear someone talk about buying property with cheap money. Now they go listen to Gary Vaynerchuck tell them to quit their jobs and follow their passions. Same risks, new clothes.

The whole startup economy could not exist without a large supply of workers willing to trade job security for the chance of a big score. Hence the last decade of media propaganda about how great that lifestyle is.

      Replying to @TheStalwart @conorsen

Is this true? Seems that there’s a whole ecosystem of tech that always need engineers and product managers and bus dev folks. If you have the skills or experience or network, are your really sacrificing much security? And if you don’t, you wouldn’t have it anyway
