You can’t talk about housing and education without noting that the existing structures are there to allow certain people to retreat into enclaves explicitly designed to limit those people’s interactions with other people not wealthy enough or white enough to be there

That also might be why a majority minority city did public housing better than more white dominant regions.

Possibly, but here’s history there too. The relegation of public hosing to certain areas had the support of minority politicians, because it preserved their voting base. Great book on this very topic:https://www.amazon.com/American-Project-Rise-Modern-Ghetto/dp/0674008308 …

That is totally believable, and it made sense when the minority voting base was smaller and white ppl were more hostile. As diversity becomes more mainstream as required by demographics, newer minority politicians will be more open to broader coalitions.

Although there is a terrible alternative that I worry about, where the definition of "white" keeps on expanding until the only non "white" people are black people.

To me that’s not the alternative, that’s the reality. Back and black Hispanics will continue to be junior partners in the Dem coalition and ignored/targeted by the GOP. And white Hispanics and Asians will assimilate into the mainstream

Could be. I'm hoping not. I think the Rs not adopting that position makes it less likely to happen -- but a big loss may change things if Trump's revealing of their character hasn't killed Rs reputation w/ hispanics and asians.

Not about winning the group. Enough Asians and Hispanics already identify as Rs. Blacks the only group that decided to put all our eggs in one basket. Valid reasons but the result is that progressive policies tend to come with a healthy measure of “we know what’s best for you”

That's fair, and there are a lot of Hispanics who seem pretty resistant to abandoning the Rs right now. Not sure if they are attracting new Hispanics and Asians.

I actually think ppl are getting better at realizing that attaching strings to aid is counterproductive. I'm generally pro-just redistribute cash and let ppl decide except for HC where there are major information asymmetries.

Color me skeptical. If you build a bunch of public housing or put more money in pubic schools but don’t dismantle the regulations that allow the white and wealthy to game the system, then you haven’t changed the underlying structures that fuel inequality

Which is why housing experts aren't only in favor of public housing. Public schooling is a bit different. Although, straight up redistribution may help by giving poor families more resources and family engagement is prob the most impt determinant in educational outcomes.

Can’t separate education from housing. Part of the creation of ghettoes was the creation of restrictive school zoning Have been efforts to reverse this as cities become more popular but public system still ripe for gaming
