For the 900’th time “milquetoast” was the best we could get at the time. It was ACA or nothing. We couldn’t get a public option and we couldn’t get single payer. There was opposition that could not be politically overcome.
What do you mean by public investment in housing? The words public housing make me very nervous

Government housing that doesn’t have a profit incentive like a private landlord does. It makes rent more affordable for low income families and college students.

I live in a majority-minority city which began investing in HUD homes in a big way starting in about 2002, and it has made a big difference here. Rent is based on your income instead of being an arbitrary market rate.

I prefer vouchers as part of a massive expansion in supply via private and maybe some public investment (that is then sold or rented at market rates). Publically owned housing is a mess.

It is and again, it’s kind of that way on purpose. I’m not yet convinced that the government can do housing in a way that isn’t a mess. Also, historically affordable housing hasn’t been new housing. Maybe we should accept that
