1. Those people did have think pieces written about them, in places like the Rolling Stone. 2. Pop-culture magazines are in the bunnies of selling pop culture, but that doesn't mean the artists they write about don't have something they are trying to say with their art.
Prince existed and so did scores of Stoney Jacksons and Mickey Frees and Shabba Doos. And none of that required think pieces. What’s changed? 2/2

No qualms with point 2. On 1, I’d be interested to read some of those pieces . That was before my awareness. I do remember what was being written by the nineties. And I stand by the claim that it was different. Not better, just different
