I've said this before and I'll say it again: The best values tend to be previous-year flagships. A new LG V50 costs between $750-1250. You can get an unused LG V40 for under $400 (and used for under $300).https://twitter.com/ProfessorF/status/1183005375810789376 …

Smartphones is one of those areas where I feel completely disconnected from the norm. I use an iPhone SE, because that’s what my company gave me. Wife and I do well for ourselves and have savings but neither of us can imagine dropping a G on a phone.

Most people are like you, I think. But since people like you buy phones once ever three years or whatever and enthusiasts buy every year, the market is very friendly to the latter.

I guess if I widen my pool, that’s right. Just seems that most of the people I know are on the “get the new latest phone every year or every other year” plan. Could be a misconception on my part

I think it's the case where there has been a shift in the last five years or so.

Towards keeping phones longer or towards getting a new one every year?

The former, but not universally. I think you used to have 1 year people and 2 year people but now you have 1 year people and 3 year people. So a greater portion of phones are now being sold to the enthusiasts.

Got it. Coincidentally, 4 years is the exact amount of time that I’ve been living outside of the US
