Then you were making not particularly thoughtful arguments and that raises the question: why have discussions based on bad arguments? Why not engage with the not dumb version of the argument? Wouldn’t that make for better discussions?

I saw this not as a counter-argument to an argument that other people were making. I saw it as a counter-argument to an argument that I had made. As such, I felt it cut *ME*. Saying "well, he should argue against what I should have said" would have been crazy on my part.
