1/I went to an interesting event last night. An employee of a newspaper in China took questions, mostly from techie types, about the Hong Kong protests, and about politics in China in general. No one is unbiased, but this person was about as unbiased as I'm likely to find.

2/Some audience members were under the impression that the HK protests are relatively unpopular. But the speaker informed us that reliable polls put support for the protesters at around 80%.

3/However, that's just in HK itself. The speaker said that in mainland China, support for the protesters is in very short supply. HK is on its own, in other words, and it's not going to be the start of a wildfire of dissent that sweeps through China.

4/According to the speaker, the long-term problem afflicting HK is loss of economic dynamism. A handful of conglomerates monopolize all economic activity on the island, and competition and vitality have vanished. Smart ambitious young people move to the mainland.

This is something that a lot don’t get about HK. I got a job here and the visa process was unbelievably easy. Easy to start a business in HK, if your market is outside of HK Different story if you directly compete with the oligarchs. And the oligarchs lean towards Beijing
